When renovating the upstairs bathroom (which is the only bathroom in the house for now, until we renovate the bathroom and sauna in the basement sometime in the future) our main goal was to make the small and cramped room bigger and more practical. Since this small room is the only bathroom and toilet in the house, not to mention also the laundry room and place for Lissu’s toilet, we really needed to make the space work well. There were two small closets opening out to the upstairs hallway that took space away from the tiny bathroom so we removed them. We won’t miss having two small closets but the extra space we got for the bathroom makes a big difference! The closets were on each side of the bathroom doorway and when removing them we made enough room for the washing machine and laundry area to fit into one corner and a nice Ikea PS cabinet into other for storage.

Like with the whole renovation we were working in the bathroom on a serious budget. The simple white tiles were on discount and fit perfectly both our budget and our plan for the bathroom. After the horror it was before we just wanted the room to be light and simple and spacious. The sink and cabinet, mirror, toilet paper holder, hangers and shelves are all from Ikea. The shower curtain is from Hemtex. My father did most of the work (we really couldn’t have done this renovation without him!).

The bathroom is still not completely finished – we still need to find a nice bathroom mat for the floor and we’ll put a countertop over the washing machine and Lissu’s toilet that is next to it. Oh and nice new towels would be lovely too! This room has been the one we’ve had the most trouble with – things not working out exactly how we hoped, having to make lots of compromizes (mostly due to budget) etc, but now that it is (almost) finished I really like it.
